Maternity Photos Styling Tips

Hey there, lovelies! Happy Wednesday! I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. Brad and I spent Saturday in Cleveland for a wedding and it was absolutely gorgeous. The rest of MDW was spent relaxing and finding some “us-time” before Baby B arrives. Our sweet baby will be here in just a few short weeks and I can’t believe how fast this pregnancy went. Today I’m super excited to share 4 maternity photos styling tips, as well as, share the maternity photos we had taken a few weeks ago.

Maternity photos weren’t really on my radar at first, but after talking to my photographer friend, she totally talked me into getting them taken. I’m seriously so glad she did. Not only did the photos turn out gorgeous but I just love getting photos taken with Brad. These photos are definitely going to be cherished and so fun to look back on as the years go. It truly is amazing what a woman’s body does to create a human being and prepare for birth.

4 Maternity Photos Styling Tips:

Choose the right fit and style for you //

Every woman is different when it comes to the shapes of their pregnant bodies, just because it worked for your friend doesn’t mean it’s best for you. When selecting your outfit, choose something that is the right fit and style for you-fitted, flare, dress, skirts, jeans, etc. If your outfit is right for you, your confidence will radiate in your photos leaving you with that lovely pregnancy glow everyone talks about. Steer clear of trendy pieces. Maternity photos are going to be treasured and reflected on over the years so select a timeless look that you aren’t going to look back on and immediately regret. Try selecting a maxi dress with simple colors or an outfit of jeans paired with a blouse or t-shirt and cardigan.

Pick the right colors  //

Going along with selecting your outfit, choosing the right color is key. Think about wearing neutrals, pastels, or any solid color. If you decide to go with a print, keep it subtle and on the softer side of colors. Anything too bright or bold will take away from you and your bump, which is what these pictures are all about. If you desire a print, have your husband/spouse/partner wear a print that matches your solid outfit. At the end of the day, if you feel solids are just too boring, trying incorporating some fun, bold accessories or bring props like the baby’s initial, baby shoes, onesies, etc.

Keep your hair and makeup simple //

Now that you have your outfit is picked out, the next step is your hair and makeup. Just like everything else, keep your hair and makeup simple as to not take away from your growing bump. You’ll want to keep your look natural and minimalistic by choosing a light foundation, simple eye look (no smoky eyes!), eyeliner, mascara, and a natural lip color. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous (or like me and feel naked without these products), add a subtle, natural blush and some highlighter on your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, and cupid’s bow to enhance the pregnancy glow you already have going on.

Select the right photographer //

When it comes to taking photos, the more relaxed and comfortable you are the better. Your comfort level will show in your photos so if you are having fun, your photos will showcase your happiness. If you feel uptight and uncomfortable, the photos will reflect your discomfort, which is not what anyone wants. Not only should you select a photographer you feel comfortable with but you should select a photographer that has experience. By seeing the photographer’s previous work, you’ll be able to gauge how skilled he or she is at taking maternity photos.

Some other things to consider: shoot your pictures in color as they can always be edited to black and white, discuss any poses that you want to be taken ahead of time, and finally sort out the details before the shoot (time, location, number of outfits, time allowed, and number of photos you’ll receive). Lastly, get everything in writing with a signed contract.
